Rahm Emanuel pokes fun at NYC’s transit woes

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel threw shade on the Big Appleā€™s subway system in an ā€” boasting about mass transit in the Second City, a place so violent that President Trump last week sent in the feds to help stop the bloodshed.

In an essay in the New York Times titled, ā€œIn Chicago, the Trains Actually Run on Time,ā€ former President Barack Obama’s onetime chief of staff referenced last weekā€™s subway derailment, ā€œan epidemic of train delays,ā€ and Gov. Andrew Cuomoā€™s declaration of a state of emergency for the MTA.

ā€œMeanwhile, in Chicago, a recent surveyšŸ’Ž found that 85 percent of passengers are satisfied with service on our transit system, the nationā€™s second most used,ā€ he wrote.

He also noted that Chicago scored a huge gift from Obama in the form of federal cash. But wšŸŸhile the trains may run on time, violence remains out of control compared to Gotham.

Emanuel boasted that in Chicago, existing lines and stations were being rebuilt, and that by focusingļ·ŗ on maintenance rather than expansion, the city had been able to avoid the kind of frequent problems plaguing New York and Washington, DC.

By June 30, there were 1,703 shooting victims in Chicago this year and 320 homicides, according to police stats.

In New York, 127 peoplšŸ…°e have been murdered in 2017 and 434 were shot, according šŸ¬to the NYPD.

Mayor Bill šŸ§œde Blasio declined to take the bait, but Joe Lhota, who recently returned as MTA chairman, fired back.

ā€œThe Mayor of Chicago ź¦†would seem to have enoušŸˆgh of his own problems to focus on without trying to save face by capitalizing on someone elseā€™s crisis,ā€ he said.

Emanuelā€™s office said last week that 20 extra agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,š„¹ Firearms andź¦œ Explosives had been assigned to Chicago to help stop crime and seize illegal guns.

On Friday, Trump tweešŸ»ted, ā€œCrime and killingsšŸ’ƒ in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year!ā€

A spokesman for de Blaź§‘sio said, ā€œWe are looking forward šŸŽ€to the plans that the new MTA leadership is developing.ā€

Neither Cuomo nor thešŸƒ White house immediately responded to a request for comment.

But somešŸ¦© Chicagoans were less than impressešŸƒd with Emanuelā€™s piece.

ā€œGiven that New York Cityā€™s annual transit ridership pushes over 1.5 billion (as opposed to Chicagoā€™s just 237 million) and New York has more than three times the train stations, any comparison to the two strikes us as very mā™’uch chalk and cheese,ā€ .

ā€œAndšŸ’› it also sā™eems ill-advised to throw rocks while you can peer through the mayorā€™s glass house and find one or two controversies.ā€

Some Times commenters were even less kind.

ā€œThe trains run on time. And itā€™s a war zone with an ever increasing body count,ā€ wršŸ§øote WB from San Diego.

ā€œYes the trains run on time. but you have the murder capital of the country, and the mayor himself covered up the horrific killing of a young man of color by the Chicago police. Emmanuel should be recalled in dšŸ“isgrace, in jail, or both. Shameful,ā€ added Mike Green from Boston.
