Brandon Drury is making a change after scary plunking

TAMPA ā€” Brandon Drury is convinced he will be ready to play on Opening Day after getting hit by a pitch on the left elbź¦œow Friday.

ā€œI was excited to get the news,ā€™ā€™ Drury said Saturday of the X-rays taken Friday being negative. ā€œI know I can dšŸ’§o everything but I will rest today. I will be all right for Thursday for sure.ā€™ā€™

The Yankees open the season against the Blue Jays in šŸ¼Toronto on Thursday. Drury wonā€™t make Sundayā€™s trip to Port Charlotte, but manager Aaron Boone said the third baseman will play against the Braves in Atlanta on Monday night.

Drury was drš’†™illed by an 87 mph pitch by Red Sox lefty Brian Johnson. He stayed in the game long enough to go first to third. Nevertheless, when he couldnā€™t make a fist with the left hand it was time to have the hinge examined.

ā€œAnytime yošŸ˜¼u canā€™t squeeze your hand itā€™s not good but išŸŽ‰t is better now,ā€™ā€™ Drury said.

After adding a face guard at the start of spring training with the Diamondbacks, DršŸ…ury explained he will wear protection on the left elbow even though he wonā€™t like it.

As for the face guard, itā€™s not becaušŸ¦¹se he got clipped in tź§‘he face while a minor leaguer.

ā€œWith the way they pitch, 98 and up in the zone, itā€™s safer to cover you face up,ā€™ā€™ Drury ā›„said.

Miguel Andujar, who was sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilź¦¦kes-Barre on March 18, was brought back and started at third base against the Blue Jays on Saturday at George M. Steinbrenner Field and went 1-for-3.

According to GM Brian Caź¦shman, Andujar will play some first base at SWB.

ā€œWe šŸ»are making sure we get flexibility and versatility if need be,ā€™ā€™ Cashman said. ā€œHe will probably do 80 [percent] and 20 [percent].ā€™ā€™

With right-hander Domingo German optioned to SWB on Saturday, tź¦ŗhe 13th spot on Booneā€™s staff went to right-hander JonšŸ„€athan Holder.

ā€œHe pitched well and a lot of other guys pitched well, but we just feel like at the same part of the conversation was that [Luis] Cessa and GermāœØan benefit from a five-man rotation [at SWB],ā€™ā€™ Cashman said.

Cashman said at some point the Yankees will use a sixth starter, but Saturdayā€™s move wasnā€™t with that in šŸŒmind. Itā€™s likely that will be April 24 against the Twins at home.

ā€œThe main reason we did this, Holder earned it and other guys could have earned itšŸŒ„, too,ā€™ā€™ Cashman said. ā€œThis is in our best interest.ā€™ā€™

Jacoby Ellsbury went 0-for-2 and played center field on SšŸøaturday. He will start the season on the DL and will šŸ’–play in games for Tampa (Florida State League).

ā€œHe will need 40 to 50 at-bats,ā€™ā€™ Cashman said šŸ’Æof Ellsbury, who was out from March 2-22 with an oblique injury.

The Yankees received 1B Mike FošŸ rd as a Rule 5 Draft return from the Mariners and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Zack Zehner may or may not make it to the big leagues, but thšŸ§œe minor league outfielder joined Giancarlo Stanton and Didi Gregorius in homering during Saturdayā€™s 13-6 Yankees win over the Blue Jays. Zehner was an 18th round pick in the 2015 draft out of Cal Poly.

The Blue Jays arš“†e the Yankeesā€™ Opening Day opponents on Thursday in Toronto and the visitors can onlyā€ hope the hosts play as bad as they did Saturday at GMS Field, where their pitchers (not all major leaguers) gave up 13 runs, 12 hits and six walks.

Stud prospect Gleyber Torres didnā€™t have a very good camp at the plate, nź§Ÿever challenged for the starting second-base job and was sent to the minors on March 13. But Saturday he delivered a game-tying, two-run single with two outs that helped the Yankees beat the Braves, 8-3.

Yankees end the Florida portion of spring training by traveling to Port Charlotte to face the Rays. Brāœ…ian Keller starts for the visitors. Players not on the trip will report to GMS Field in the afternoon. The team flies to Atlanta late in the day.
