The House That Ruth Built will be soon be a thing of the past, and yesterday Babe Ruth’s daughter made one final trip to see it.
“I wasn’t sure if I would see Yankee Stadium again,” Julia Ruth Stevens said before the Yankees lost, 6-0, to the Reds. “I’m thrilled to see where Daddy called his second home.”
As for what she thought Ruth’s reaction would be to the closing of Yankee Stadium, Stevens said, “Time moves on.”
The 91-year-old was on hand with other family members to present Alex Rodriguez with the 2007 Babe Ruth Home Run Award.
She said she didn’t recall her first trip to the Stadium, but said it was some time during the 1920s. She said she hoped to get a brick or other piece of memorabilia from the Stadium. Stevens added she has no plans to make it to the new stadium, scheduled to open next year.
“This is my last trip East, so I wanted to say goodbye to it,” said Stevens.
