“I didn’t realize Jonathan Groff was in that show,” someone said to me yesterday after seeing a photo from
“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.”
Actually Groff, who until recently was in a Public production, the atrocious “Singing Forest,” isn’t in the excellent “Andrew Jackson.”
The Groff twin playing Old Hickory is Benjamin Walker, who in addition to the “Spring Awakening” hottie also looks like a cross between Adam Ant and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. I have to admit Walker hadn’t made that much of an impression in last season’s revival of “Dangerous Liaisons.” (The one thing I remember most from that dull show is how miscast Laura Linney was.) But turns out he has quite a voice — even if he sounded more comfortably in his upper register when I saw the show on Sunday night — and he rocks out as the seventh prez. Now let’s hope the show, which closes way too soon on Sunday, finds a new home somewhere else.
