POLICE: ARREST IN LONG ISLAND HATE-CRIME BEATING

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A man has been arrested on a hate crime charge in the beating of an Ecuadorean immigrant on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say Ramon Rodriguez is due to be arraigned Saturday. The 20-year-old was arrested Friday on a charge of assault as a hate crime in the Aug. 14 attack near the Patchogue train station.

Police didn’t know whether he had a lawyer, and no telephone number could be found for him.

Police have said the 22-year-old victim was kicked, punched and robbed by three young white men who used racial slurs.

Police say Rodriguez, who is Hispanic, hurled anti-Mexican epithets during the attack.

Another Ecuadorean man was fatally stabbed nearby last fall in what authorities also called a bias attack.
