NHL: Crosby still out with concussion

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby remains bothered by a concussion and will not resume practicing or playing until he is symptom-free. The NHL’s leading scorer missed the Penguins’ 4-0 home loss to the Wild last night, and isn’t expected to play in the team’s next two games.

* Vancouver’s Alain Vigneault and Philadelphia’s Peter Laviolette earned co-coaching positions in the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 30 in Carolina.

COLLEGE: Rutgers QB Savage to transfer

Quarterback Tom Savage is leaving Rutgers. The sophomore who lost his starting job to freshman Chas Dodd, informed coach Greg Schiano of his decision, the school announced. One of the school’s most touted recruits, Savage played 18 games during his two-year career and competed 52.2 percent of his passes.

* Florida State extended Jimbo Fisher‘s contract for one year, taking the head football coach through the 2015 season. Fisher will make $2.75 million a year for five years. The Seminoles finished the season 10-4 in Fisher’s first year.

* LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said the school has not been contacted by Michigan about head football coach Les Miles. He issued that statement after the Tigers returned from their 41-24 Cotton Bowl win over Texas A&M.

ETC.: Cubs deal 5 prospects for Garza

The Cubs acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Garza from the Rays in an eight-player trade. The 27-year-old Garza pitched a no-hitter against Detroit last season, when he went 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA. The Rays get two of the Cubs’ top prospects, right-hander Chris Archer and shortstop Hak-Ju Lee, along with three other players.

* In Chicago, Derrick Rose scored 36 points and the Bulls cooled off the Celtics with a 90-79 victory. . . . In Dallas, Dwight Howard had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and the Magic extended the NBA’s longest active winning streak to nine games with a 117-107 victory over the Mavericks.

* In Kapalua, Hawaii, Robert Garrigus made another strong recovery, holing a 50-foot eagle putt on the final hole to get back atop the leaderboard with with fellow Americans Steve Stricker (8-under 65) and Jonathan Byrd at the season-opening Tournament of Champions.

* In Doha, Qatar, Roger Federer won the Qatar Open without dropping a set when he beat defending champion Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4 in a 79-minute final.

* Roy Hodgson‘s miserable six-month reign as Liverpool manager ended amid a fan revolt with the club’s former title-winning player and boss Kenny Dalglish put in charge until the end of the season.

* Junior Lateisha Philson of Benjamin Cardozo set the meet record in the girls 55-meter hurdles at 7.90 at the 17th annual Hispanic Games presented by the Navy at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory.
