Ed Grezinsky was asked Friday at the press conference before the PSAL Class AA championship game if this was his most satisfying season in 19 years on the bench at Murry Bergtraum.
“I’d like to answer that question on Sunday,” Grezinsky said.
He got his chance after top-seed Murry Bergtraum defeated No. 2 South Shore, 56-48, for its 13th straight city title Sunday morning at Madison Square Garden. This one, he said, was the best of them all. His team didn’t have any superstars, but it kept the legacy alive.
“This absolutely is,” the legendary head man said. “This is the hardest working group of kids I’ve had in 13 years. Everybody doubted them and nobody believed in them.”’
For the first time ever, the Lady Blazers were the underdogs heading into the Garden. But yet again, they were the ones hoisting the PSAL trophy.
Shequana Harris had 14 points, Cori Coleman had 10 points and Monae Abrams had seven points and 13 rebounds for Bergtraum (22-3). Senior leader Ashley Gomez had 13 points and eight rebounds and was named the game’s MVP. Harris had the two biggest shots, including a 3-pointer that put the Blazers up 52-46 with 1:04 left in the game.
Jasmine Odom had 12 points to lead South Shore (23-6) and Fannisha Price and Tatiana Wilson each had 10 points. This was supposed to be the year that the talented, deep Vikings, who lost to Bergtraum in the finals two years ago and the semis last season, took down the Lady Blazers.
It wasn’t to be. Bergtraum is the champ yet again. All those pundits were proven wrong and the Lady Blazers will play in the New York State Federation Class AA semifinals in Albany on March 28.
“[Thirteen] is definitely a lucky number,” Grezinsky said.
