Mets’ Young OK after bullpen session

Chris Young was able to throw his normal bullpen session with no problems and said he expects to be able to make his next scheduled start on Sunday in Atlanta.

“It’s a good feeling, a relief to get that off my mind,” Young said after throwing 35 pitches before yesterday’s doubleheader.

Young, whose shoulder injuries have plagued him throughout much of his career and kept him off the field for most of the past two seasons, had his start moved from tonight to Sunday because of biceps tendinitis.

“I would have gotten off the mound if I felt something,” Young said of the session.

Young, who is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA, has been the Mets’ best starter during the early part of the season and said the tendinitis was unrelated to any of his previous shoulder woes.

After spring training and nearly two weeks of the regular season, the Mets still seem to be searching for an everyday second baseman.

Daniel Murphy started the first game, followed by Brad Emaus in the nightcap and both continue to struggle. Manager Terry Collins said before the doubleheader that he hoped one would emerge.

“Eventually, you’d like the least amount of platooning as possible,” Collins said. “You need to have as steady a lineup as you can.”

Murphy went 1-for-4 in the first game, and Emaus was 0-1 as a pinch hitter. Emaus went 1-for-4 in Game 2 and made a costly bobble in the sixth, which cost the Mets a double play and allowed the tying run to score. Murphy was 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in the second game.

Scott Hairston came close to a second homer in the second game, but after an umpire review, the ball was ruled to have hit the top of the left field wall. Mike Nickeas followed with a double for his first two career RBIs.

Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to 12 games when he doubled in the third inning of the first game and then had a two-run single in the nightcap. . . . Bobby Parnell hasn’t had much success in the eighth inning of games this season and things didn’t get any better for him in the first game, when he entered in the seventh and promptly gave up a homer to Troy Tulowitzki. He has given up runs in three of his past four appearances.
