Rangers camp starts with new team motto

OK, so as inspiratišŸ’§onal messages go, the ā€œClean Slate ā€¦Grab Itā€ motto adopted by Rangersā€™ coach Alain Vigneault isnā€™t quite, ā€œClear Eyes, Full Hearts, Canā€™t Lose.ā€

But then, it isnā€™t ā€œIf You DošŸŽ€nā€™tšŸ’ƒ Block Shots, You Donā€™t Play,ā€ either, so thatā€™s a start.

Thatā€™s a start for the Blueshirts, who started their first training camp under Vigneault on Wednesday wearing T-shirts bearing the 2013-14 slogan while going through their physicals that preceded Thursdayā€™s on-ice testing and the preseason work during ź¦“which the new coaching staff will install its system and communicate its philosophy.

That program actually began at Wednesday nightā€™s team meeting during which Vigneault made reference to the SšŸ¦‹tanley Cup that has been won once by the Blueshirts over the last 73 years and 72 seasons.

ā€œThatā€™s our quest,ā€ said Vigneault, who came within one victory of winning the Cup in Vancouver in 2011 before losing to the Bruins in a seven-game Final as a miniature Stanley Cup sat on his desk in his office. ā€œGetting to tš“†hat goal is a daily process that starts in training camp.

ā€œ[They will have an idea [at the meeting] what Iā€™m looking for. They will have a real good idea where the coaching staff is coming from and what to expect,ā€ he said. ā€œItā€™s a clź¦†ean slate, everyone is going toā™ get a chance.

ā€œItā€™s up to them to grab it.ā€

As expected, camp began without Derek Stepan, the unsigned restricted free agent whose contract talks with management are at an impasse. Stź©²epan became the second Ranger of the hard-cš’…Œap era to miss the opening of camp because of a contract dispute four years after Brandon Dubinsky sat out the first week until he reached an agreement.

In 2009, John Tortorella, then the coach, said it was ā€œstupidā€ of Dubinsky to mšŸŽiss the opš“†ening of camp and that his agent, Kurt Overhardt, was ā€œstupid.ā€

On Wednesday, Vigneault avoided such foolishness, choosingāœ… instead to say he will ā€œtake [Stepan] with open arms when he gets here.ā€

Camp also opened unexpectedly without Martin Biron, the bacšŸ…˜kup goš“°altender, who left New York to return to his home in Buffalo to deal with what Vigneault framed as ā€œa personal situation.ā€ Uncertain as to a timetable for Bironā€™s return, the Rangers brought erstwhile New Jersey backup Johan Hedberg to camp on a PTO.

Vigneault said he did not watch tapes of the teamā€™s games last year because he did not want to carry ā€œpreconceived notionsā€ into camp. Scott Arniel, the assistant coach responsible for the power play, and Ulf Samuelsson, the assistant responsible for the penalty kill, did review all of the respective speciaź¦lty team tapes from a year ago.

The Blueshirts finished 23rd overall on the power play in each of the last two seasons and slid to 15th in the NHL on the penalty kill last year after ranking fifth in 2011-12. Vigneault ā˜‚said the club will begin specialty team work next Wednesday.

It is expected Vigneaulā›¦t will oversee a more diverse approach to the game than Tortorella, whose scheme became increasingly conservative. The coach said that he does not believe the team is in need of a culture change.

ā€œI believe the Rangers have been doing a lot of the right things for a lot of years,ā€ Vigneault said. ā€œThere are some things I prefer to be done a certain way, but as far as a dramatic change, itā€™s one of the best šŸ’Žorganizations in the league.

ā€œThe atmosphere and environment I want to crš“†eate is a professional, positive environment,ā€ he said. ā€œI want them to feel good about coming to the rink and getting better every day.ā€

Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin are both expected to miss much of the opening month as they rehab shoulders following postseason surgery. Their short-term absences will create the opportunity for young forwards such as Chris Kreider, J.T. Miller, Danny Kristo, Oscar Lindberg, Marek Hrivik and Jesper Fast to gain roster spots ašŸƒnd prime lineup assignments.

ā€œTalent šŸøhas no age,ā€ Vigneault said. ā€œIf a player can help the New York Rangers wišŸŒœn, heā€™s going to play on our team.ā€

Sounds like a motto.
