A 40-year tradition continues for the Vallone family ā thanks to a few dozen voź¦ters.
Paul Vallone, son of former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr.,š has been declared the winner of a close, five-way Democratic primary race to replace disgraced Councilman Dan Halloran in āQueens.
Vallone won by 190 votes out of about 8,700 cast.
āAt the end of the day, itās under 200 votes [for] . . . the margin of victory. Thatās like two votes per election district,ā said sš½econd-place finisher Auź¦stin Shafran.
āBut whether you lost by one or 1,000, it doesnāt really matter in the long run.ā
š°Vallone Sr. served in the council from 1974 to 2001. His seat was assumed by Paulās brother, Peter Vallone Jr., who ran for Queens borough president this year and lost in the primary.
Halloran chose not to seek re-election afteš§r his arrest on bribery charges in April.
āWe look forward to uniting the Democratic Party and restoring honest and effective leadership to the 19th City Council seat,ā said Paul Valloneās spokesman, Austin Finan.
Vallone now faces Denšnis Saffran in the general election in the heavily Democratic districtš.
