From nose to tail the cub was 10.6 inches long and 9.8 inches wide around her belly. Her eyes had not opened yet.

Mei Xiang was 15 years old when the cub was born on Aug. 23.

Zoo keepers examined the cub 5 days after her birth. She weighed in at 4lb 8oz, had a steady heartbeat, a full stomach and was both nursing and digesting normally.

The National Zoo tweeted this photo on September 9, 2013. They said keepers have started to do some training with Mei Xiang to keep the cub safe and make sure she doesn’t get cuddled too hard.

Mei Xiang has had trouble with childbirth and babies in the past. Last September, the panda lost a 6-day-old cub believed to be female.
