Mets call up Wilfredo Tovar

PHILADELPHIA — Just when Wilfredo Tovar thought his season was over, he is getting to wear a💝 major league uniform for the first time.

The 22-year-old infielder had already returned to his native Venezuela for the winter, but was informed on Thursday he had be🅰en added to the Mets’ roster ♊to provide depth at shortstop.

“I was surprised,” Tovar said Fr🦂iday after the Mets beat the Phillies 6-4 at Citizens Bank Park.

Tovar is expected to start at shortstop on Sunday, according to manager Terry Collins. Tovar gives the team another option behind Omar Quintanilla in the aftermath of Ruben Tejada suffering a broken fibula in his right leg, ending💖 his season.

In 133 games for ౠDouble-A Binghamton this season, Tovar batted .263 with four homers, 36 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
