Mets think Piazza is a Hall of a guy

Mike Piazza will be inducted as the 27th member of the Mets Hall of Fame Sunday before the Mets play their season finale ꦿa෴gainst the Brewers. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 12:45 p.m.

Piazza hit 220 of his 427 home runs with the Mets, third in team history. His 396 homers as a catcher are the most in baseball history. And both Terry Collins, managing in the Dodgers system when Piazza started his career, and David Wright, a Met teammate when he was ending it, each saiജd the honor is well-deserved.

“I wa🦄s with the Dodgers when Mike was drafted,” said manager Terry Collins, who agreed to a two-year extension with the Mets, was managing Albuquerque in the PCL when Piazza got drafted in 1988. I know he meant a lot to baseball, period. “To go in the Mets Hall of Fame is a special day for Mike.

“He’s certainly well-deserving.He’s the greatest offensive catcher the game has ever seen, so it’ll be f🧜un to ♓see him.I like Mike a lot, so it’ll be fun to say hi to him.’’

After signing a long-term extension, Wright likely will end up having one 🦩of these nights himself someday. But he’s just looking f𝓡orward to seeing his friend and former teammate honored.

“I’ve gotten a chance to see Mike with the Italian team at the WBC and he’s come to gaꦡmes here and there,” Wright sai🌄d. “It’s always good to catch up with former teammates, especially guys that are Hall of Fame-caliber players.I understand they sold a lot of tickets and it should be a nice atmosphere, well-deserved for Mike.”

“I’m definitely going to make sure I’m out there to enjoy it and celebrate Mike’s career. … I care deeply about th♈is organization and Mike is a big part of the history of this organization, and also he was a teammate. It’ll be nice to celebrat🐽e Mike.’’

The Mets’ 4-2, 10-inning loss to Milwaukee did guarantee that next year’s draft pick will be in the top 10 and protected, meaning they can sign a free agent like Shin-So⭕o Choo without forf𒅌eiting it.

After the Mets tied the game in the ninth on Eric Young Jr.’s RBI single that scored Matt den Dekker, the Brewers winning rally started with a walk to pinch-hitter Caleb Gindl. He took third on Jonathan Lucro𒉰y’s broken-bat up the middle, and eventual loser Scott Atchison (3-3) surrendered former Met Carlos Gomez’s RBI single to right that scored Gindl with the winning run. Yuniesky Betancourt singled to right to score Lucroy for an insurance run that wasn’t needed.

Wright was back in the lineup after missing one game with a swollen right thumb. He went 0-for-5 and missed a chance to win it for the Mets after grounding into an inning-ending do😼uble play in the ninth.

Juan Lagares threw Jon Lucroy out at the plate in the sixth for his 14th outfield assist of the year, a Mets rookie record. … Daniel Murphy had two singles and an RBI sacrifice fly, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

Young still is tied with Milwaukee shortstop Jean Segurafor for the NL le✤ague in steals with 44. Both started Saturday but neither swiped a base.

Collins said Jon Niese pes꧂tered the Mets into letting him start Sunday’s finale, but he will be on an 80-85 pitch limit. Daisuke Matsuza🤡ka likely will get in the game as well.
