A nationally renowned oncologist watchedā in anguish as his 9-year-old son was fatally hit by a cab just steps from their Upper West Side apartment Friday night.
The dad and boy were crossing the street at West End Avenue and 97th Street shortly before 9 p.m. ā about a half hour after a 73-year-old man was killšed iną¶£ a separate accident two blocks away.
That man was struck and ādragged by a private šÆtour bus on Broadway and West 96th Street.
A doorman heard the dad, Dr. Richard Stock, 51š, cry out in horror after the cab hit young Cooper as it made a left turn onto West End Avenue.
āIt was aš± terrifying screamā,ā said Alex Lassi, the doorman.
Richard, who suffered a leg injury, and his son were taken to St. Lukeās HospitašØl, where Cooper was pronounced dead.
Richard is a radiation oncologist who treatedā former Mayor Rudy Giuliani for prostate cancer in 2000. He teaches at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and lectures across the world on his specializations including prostate and bladder cancer.
Lassi said Richard was hysterical, ātrying to hold onto his childā and wāailing āOh, my God! No, no, no!ā
His wife, Dana āStock, was alāerted to the crash by her doorman and rushed down from the familyās West End Avenue apartment at 771 West End Ave.
Dana sprinted down š«the street to find her son bloodied on the pavement, another doorman said.
Two passengerš„s in a passing vehicle stopped to help the child, witnesses said.
Lassi said one of the Good Samaritans called 911 and reported that the boy was stillā breathing.
But by the time paramedics arrived, Coopšer ālooked lifelessā and āhad blood all over his face,ā a neighbor said.
āI saw him when theyš brought him in,ź¦ā an emergency-room patient named Monique said.
āHe was covered in ša white sheet ā the whole są¶£heet was bloody,ā she said.
Cooper āwas a super, super kid, š¦a special kid,ā one family friend said,ź¦ calling the boy āexceptionally bright and a wizard with numbers.ā
Cooper has an older sister, the famš¦ilyās doorman said.
He added that the father and son often attenź¦ded Knick games.
In the earlier incident, the ušnidentified elderly man died at the scene after he was pulled along the pavement by a green charter bus heading south on Broadway and turning east onto 96th Street.
That driver also stayed at the scenāe of the accident.
Neithšer the bus driver nor the cab driver was charged Friday, šbut the investigations are continuing.
