A brief history of Cinderellas

On Friday, Disney’s classic 1950 animated feature “Cinderella” is running straight down those castle steps and into theaters for a whole new live-action version. But this is hardly the fir🍨st time the princess and her inability to keep track of her footwear has been revived for the screen. Here are 14 of the most memorable iterations of the character.

‘Cinderella’ (1950)

Easily the most iconic iteration of the story, the original animated film features the unforgettable songs “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” and “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes.ও” Two maligned direct-to-video sequels were released in 2002 and 2007.

‘The Glass Slipper’ (1955)

MGM’s largely forgotten movie ওmusical🐲 starred Leslie Caron as Ella.

‘Cinderella’ (1957)

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s version of the fairy tale was first broadcast live in 1957 and starred Julie Andrews. It featured memorable songs of its own, such as “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” and “In My O🎃wn Little Corner.” The show would be remade twice for tele🍸vision, curiously not making it to Broadway until 2013.

Jerry Lewis led this 🍌comedic gender-f꧟lip of the tale.

‘Cinderella’ (1965)

Lesley Ann Warren slipped o꧂n the glass shoes for the second TV version, which featured a🌌 new script.

‘Cinderella’ (1997)

The Disney-ow💞ned channel ABC aired a TV movie version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical,🔯 starring Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother.

‘Ever After’ (1998)

This version of 🦩“Cinderella” stars Drew Barrymore and is widely considered a more feminist retelling.

‘CinderElmo’ (1999)

No list of this sort woul🍎d be complete without the in♕clusion of the furry red guy’s foray into the fairy tale, which aired as a special on Fox.

‘Ella Enchanted’ (2004)

Based on the Newbery-winning novel of the sa🐼me name, the movie starred Anne Hathaway as El🅘la, who has the burden of being cursed with the “gift of obedience,” which prevents her from disobeying anyone.

‘A Cinderella Story’ (2004)

“Lizzie McGuire” star H✅ilary Duff led a modern-day imagining of the tale, in which Stifler’s Mom plays Duff’s Botox-ed stepmother. Direct-to-video sequels starr꧑ing Selena Gomez, then Lucy Hale, followed.

‘Once Upon a Time’ (2011)

On ABC’s current show that combines pretty much every Disney character into one story, Cinderella has gotten the shaft. Played by Jessy Schram, she only had o🐻ne substantive plot thread in the series’ first season, when she got mixed up in a shady bargain with Rumpelstiltskin.

‘Rags’ (2012)

This presen♏t-day-set Nickelodeon TV movie starred Max Schnei🦹der as a male version of Cinderella to Keke Palmer’s prince.

‘Into the Woods’ (2014)

In the movie version of Stephen Sondheim’s fairy tale mas🍒h-up, Anna Kendrick st♏ars as an indecisive Cinderella with the fan-favorite song “On the Steps of the Palace.”

‘Cinderella’ (2015)

The new remake of the Disney animated movie stars Lily James in the title role with Richard Madden as her prince. Extravagant costumes were produced by Oscar-winning designer Sandy Powell.
