New laws could spell the end of motorized pedicabs

The city wants to put the brakes on motorized pedicabs by 🦄revising a rules so poorly written eight years a𝔉go that they couldn’t be enforced.

The City Council appeared to have outl🎉awed the juiced-up rides in 2007 via a bill regulating the free-wheeling industry.

But the rules had so many potholes that the Department of Consumer Af♔fairs decided any cases it pursued wouldn’t stand u🧜p in court.

“It’s critical this law have teeth so we can protect the public from the dangers of motorized pedicabs,” said Julie Menin, departme♔nt commissi💜oner.

She said the revised la💝w “will eli𒊎minate any gray area.”

It states, “No pedicab business or pedicab driver, shall, at any time, operate, or authorize the operation of, any pedicab that is propelled, in whole or in part, by any motor or other similar mechanical device…”

The city is expected to enforce the new rules after solici🦂ting pubꦍlic input at a June 15 hearing.
