Politicians call for tougher machete laws after park attack

Lawmakers on Wednesday demanded tougher regulations to ♓prevent a repeat of the wild machete attack in Bryant Park.

“It is disturbing,” said state Sen. Tony Avella, a day after a foreign tourist was slashed with an easy-to-get and 🍰hard-to-ban machete. “They are deadly💖 weapons,” he said.

Sma▨ller knives such as switchblades and gravity knives are already banned. But machetes are considered tools, 🌠the same as butcher’s knives.

Avella, of Queens, introduced a bill in Februa𝔍ry increasing penalties for crimes committed with machetes. It sailed through the Senate but got stalled in the Assembly.

Part of the problem, Avella said, is that machetes serve a functional role as an agricultural tꦜool to chop brush or split coconuts.
