Fewer students required to go to summer school this year

School’s out for more students this summer.

Fewer city public school students are required to attend summer clಌasses this year and a lಌower percentage have been held back a grade since Bill de Blasio became mayor, a new report said.

The Department of Education said about 19,000 third- through eighth-graders, ꦍa mere 6.2 percent, were required to attend summer classes to reach the next grade in September, according to The New York T༒imes.

These figures are lower than for the pa🐼st five y𒉰ears in those grades, when the average was about 26,000 students, or 8.3 percent, the paper said.

The percentage of students held b♕ack in their grade also fell to 1.2 percent this year compared to 2🅷.5 percent in the previous school year, according to the Times.

The city said the drop is attributable to a state law that made testing just one factor among many considered when deciding if a student merits ad🦋vancement. In the past, tests were the main deciding factor.
