Trump to a divided America: ‘Don’t be afraid’

Presidentā™-elect Donald Trump said Sunday that Americans have nothing to fear from his incoming adminisšŸ’¦tration.

ā€œI would tell them donā€™t be afraid, absolutely,ā€ Trump when asked about the thousands of protesters from coast to coast who have taken to the streets since heź©µ became president-elect.

The wide-ranging interview, taped Friday in į©šį©šį©šį©šį©šį©šā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤į©šā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤į©šā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤į©šš’€±į©šį©šį©šhis Trump Tower penthouse, maršŸ€…ked Trumpā€™s first televised sit-down since his surprise victory over Hillary Clinton.

Topics ranged fšŸ·rom the social divisions exposed by their bitter race to Trumpā€™s willingness to walk back some of his more incendiary campaign promises and his shock at winning the White House.

Trump admitšŸ§œted that while his family was high-fiving over the Election Day returns, he was left nearly speechless by his poll-defying win.

ā€œI realized thį€£at this is šŸ¼a whole different life for me now,ā€ the billionaire builder and reality TV star said.

ā€œIā€™ve done a lot of big things, Iā€™ve neverā˜‚ done anything like this. It is ā€” it is so big, it is so ź§ƒā€” itā€™s so enormous, itā€™s so amazing.ā€

Trump said he was surprised to hear about reports that his supporters had harassed blacks, Hispanics, Muslims and gays, was ā€œvery surprised to hear that … because Iā€™m trying to bring this country together.ā€

ā€œI am so saddened to hear that,ā€ he said.

ā€œAnd I say, ā€˜Stop it.ā€™ If it ā€” if it helps. I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: ‘Stop it.’ā€

Pressed about how ā€œAfrican-Americans think thereā€™s a target on their backā€ and ā€œMuslims are terrified,ā€ Trump said: ā€œI think itā€™s horrible if thatā€™s happening.ā€

‘I realized that this is a whole different life for me now.’

But he added: ā€œš“ƒ²I think itā€™s built up by the press because,šŸ’¦ frankly, theyā€™ll take every single little incident that they can find in this country, which couldā€™ve been there before.ā€

He also expressed disappointment that the LGBTQ community was expressing fearšŸ’žs over his election.

ā€œAnd yet I mentioned them at the Republican NationšŸŒal Convention,ā€ he said.

ā€œEverybodā™ˆy said,šŸŒƒ ā€˜That was so great.ā€™ I have been ā€” you know, Iā€™ve been ā€” a supporter.ā€

On one of his signature campaign issues ā€” his repeated promise to build a “big, beautiful wallā€ along the southern border with Mexico ā€” Trump said some parts might actually be a fence.

ā€œBut cešŸ‘rtain areas, a wall is more appropriate. Iā€™m very good at this, itā€™s called construction,ā€ he said.

And despite his vow to ā€œdrain the swampā€ in Washington, Trump said that while he wants to get rid of ā€œlobbyists and specialšŸø interests,ā€ his transition team is stacked with them because ā€œthatā€™s the only people you have down there.ā€

ā€œIā€™m saying that they know the syź¦”stem right now, but weā€™re going to phase that out,ā€ he said.

Trump reiterated his plan to impose term limits oš“‚ƒn members of Congress and prevent them from later becoming lobbyists, and š“†said one of his ā€œvery importantā€ first steps ā€” and a priority to the GOP-led Congress ā€” would be to quickly appoint a Supreme Court justice to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Trump said all his judges ā€œwill be pro-lifeā€ and ā€œvery pro-Second Ameā™ndment.ā€ When pressed on the possible reversal of Roe v. Wade, he said the issue ā€œwould go back to the statesā€ and that women seeking abortions may ā€œhave to go to another statešŸ§ø.ā€

Asked if that was OK, he said: ā€œWell, weā€™ll see what happens. Itā€™s šŸ”Ægot a long way to go, just so you understand. That has a long, long way to go.ā€

But in a break with social conservatives, Trump alsš’Ŗo said that gay marriage ā€œwas settled in the Supreme Courtā€ and should stand as the law of the land.

ā€œItā€™s done,ā€ Trump said. ā€œThese cases have gone to the Supreme CoušŸŽ‰rt. Theyā€™ve been settled. And Iā€™m fine with that.ā€

Trump, whoā€™s famed as a jet-setter with his lavish, gold-trimmed penthouse and sprawling Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., said he wasnā€™t planning on much leisure time while šŸŒ³in office.

ā€œWeā€™re lowį©šį©šį©šį©šį©šį©šā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤į©šā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤į©šā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤į©šš’€±į©šį©šį©šering taxes, weā€™re taking care of health care. I mean, thereā€™s just so much to be done. So I donā€™t think weā€™ll be very big on vacations, no.ā€

He also repeļ·ŗated his pledge to forgo the $400,000 annual presidential pay in favor oą¼ŗf a measly $1.

ā€œIā€™m not going to take the salarź¦“y. Iā€™m not taking it,ā€ Trump said.

In a reversal of campaign-trail criticism, Trump heaped praise on the quality of US military leadership, saying: ā€œWe have some great generals. We have great geā›„nerals.ā€

But when pressed about his previous claims that he knew more thš”‰an the generals about ISIS, he said: ā€œIā€™ll be honest with you, I probably šŸ’®do because look at the job theyā€™ve done.ā€

He refused to divulge any detź¦•ails of his plans to destroy ISIS, saying, ā€œI donā€™t want to tell them anything. I donā€™t wantš’ˆ” to tell anybody anything.ā€

Trump also insisted that heā€™d prefer to get rid of the Electoral College system, even though it will make him the 45th commander-in-chief despite losing the popular votešŸ’¦ to Clinton.

ā€œIā€™m not going to change my mind just because I won,ā€ Trump said. ā€œBut I would rather see it where you went with simple votes. You knowš’ˆ”, š†you get 100 million votes and somebody else gets 90 million votes and you win.ā€

As for the man Clinton believes cost her the election, Trump wouldnā€™t say if heā€™ll seek the resignation of FBI Director James Comey, who revived the probešŸ€… of her email scandal 11 days ahead of the election, only to clear her again three days before polls opeš’Ŗned.

ā€œHe may have had very good reasons for doing what he did,ā€ Trump said. ā€œThis is a tough time for him. And I would like to tšŸ·alk to him before Iā€™d answer a question like that.ā€
