This is Us
Tuesday, 9 p.m., NBC
The fall season finale of āThis Is Usā was the seriesā most dramatic episode to date. Kateās (Chrissy Metz) boyfriend Toby š¦(Chris Sullivan) keeled over in Randallās (Sterling K. Brown) living room on Christmas Eve. Iāf that wasnāt enough, William (Ron Cephas Jones) went to an AA meeting and met an old friend ā a lover heād run out on.
Denis OāHare, who has played multiple crazy roles on āAmerican Horror Story,ā š¼joined the cast in a recurring role as Jessie, an Englishman whom William had met in the 12-step program. When the show resumes this Tuesday, Jessie begins to spend more time with terminally ill William, and poor Randall, the shock absorber of the series, has one more adjustment to make in his constantly changing life.
OāHare, 54, spoke to The Post about his role from Santiago, Chiź¦”le, where he is perforź¦ ming in a one-man show called āAn Illiad,ā based on Homerās famous poem about the fall of Troy.
Had you worked with Ron Cephas Jones?
Iāve known him for years. We had crossed paths in London a long time ago when I was doing a play called āTake Me Outā and he was doing a play called āJesšuš²s Hopped the A Train.ā Iāve written a play about the Bible called āThe Good Bookā and we were desperate to get Ron to do a reading of it. So it was ironic that I ended up working with him.
How many episodes will you be in?
Iāve done two. I love the show. I love Sterling. And I watched it because Chrissy Metz was in āAmerican Horror Story: Freak Show.ā I love what theāyāre doing structurally. Itās refreshing in the age of cynicism to have a show about sentiment and peopleās hunger for meaning.
Jessie has a distinctive accent. Where is he from?
I can see Jessie coming from London. I used Martin Freeman oź§f āSherlockā as my model. I love his accent. Itās an everyday, common-Joe sound as opposed to a Hugh Grant posh accent.
Will you be coming back to āAmerican Horror Storyā?
Well, [creator] Mr. [Ryan] Murphy is so enigmatic,šļ·ŗ so I donāt know. I have faith Iāll be back. I love working with him. The writers and I get along very well. But I never knew who Liz Taylor [the character he played on āAmerican Horror Story: Hotelā] was going to be until a few episodes in.
Do you have a favorite season of āAHSā?
Itās hard for me to say. Obviously āHotelā was a really exciting storyline. I got to be naked with Finn Wittrock;ā whatās wrong with that? I love Spalding of āCovenā because of his crazy life in the attic.
