‘The Crown’ won big at the Golden Globes

ღ‘The Crown,” the pricey and majestic Netflix drama about the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II, was the big winner at the Golden Globes, beating out such high-profile fare as HBO’s “Westworld” and NBC’s family drama “This is Us.” Claire Foy꧒, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

The victory did not come as a surprise, though, as “The Crown” plays solidly to the upscale tastes of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. More interesting was the HFಌPA’s choice of “Atlanta,” Donald Glover’s portrait of young African-American men, as Best Comedy Series. Glover also won a second Golden Globe, as Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

“The Night Manager,” an exciting spy miniseries based on the 1992 novel by John le Carré, went three-for-four, picking up acting awards for nominees Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie. The production was shut out at the Emmy Awards in September. The award for Best Limited Series went to “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which also won the Best Actress award in that category for Sarah Paulson’s acclaimed po💝rtrayal of Marcia Clark.

Amazon, which received 11 nℱominations between film and television categories, celebrated one victor🍸y with Billy Bob Thornton, who won Best Actor in a Drama Series for the David E. Kelley legal drama “Goliath.”

The HFPA surprised everyone by departing from its usual practice of gi▨ving a sitcom ingenue the prize for Best Actress in a 𒀰Comedy Series. This year, that distinction went to “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross, who also beat out Emmy favorite Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Sarah Jessica Parker (“Divorce”) and could not conceal her delight. “It’s nice at 44 [years old]. I like it here,” she said.
