ATLANšTA ā Matty Ice put his doubters on ice Saturday ā for another week, šat least.
With a pacāked-to-the-rafters home crowd providing a deafening backdrop, the Falcons are one step from the Super Bowl after Matt Ryan directed a convincing 36-20 victory over the Seahawks in the NFC divisional playoffs.
Ryan proved his MVP-worthy regular season was legitimate and flipped the script on a wš¼oeful career playoff record with a near-flawless performance in leading Atlanta to its first trip to š¦the conference title game since 2012.
Ryan torched Seattleās seventh-ranked defense in the fiš rst haš°lf, throwing for 190 yards and two touchdowns, and ended with 338 yards and three TDs on a 26-of-37 passing line with no interceptions while winning for just the second time in six career playoff starts.
āI donāš t pay any attention to that stuff because all it does is take away froš»m taking care of your business,ā Ryan said when asked about a legion of skeptics, including Brett Favre this week, all focused on his playoff record.
It was an emphatic response from Ryan and the Falconsā supercharged offense, which led the NFL in scorinš“g in the regular season, but garnered few true believers along the way because of Atlantaās ā and, in particular, Ryanās ā š¼repeated postseason failures.
And the final score could have been worse:š The game enź¦¦ded with Ryan taking a knee at the Seattle 2-yard line.
The capacity crowd of 71,155 in what could be the final game at the Georgia Dome (the Falcons are moving intoā a new building next door thš¦©is fall) had an ear-bleeding response of it own ā serenading Ryan with āM-V-P!ā chants all afternoon.
Ryan deserved all oą²f it after averaging a preposterous 9.1 yards per pass attempt and cš²ompleting passes to eight different receivers as Atlanta simply overwhelmed Seattleās shorthanded āLegion of Boomā defense.
Ryan also continued what is an incredible individual roll thš at has seen him compile a š¦©passer rating of 120 or better in each of the past five games. Ryanās numbers in that stretch are obscene: a 73 percent completion rate, 1,469 yards, 14 TDs and zero interceptions for a 131.8 rating.
āItās just amazing š¼to watch,ā Falcons defensive end Dwight Freeney said. āHeās having as good of a year as Iāve ever seenā, and Iām happy for him because we all know heās had his ups and downs over the years.ā
The Falcons, meanwhile, had no mercy for Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson,ā± even before the game started.
Team officials taunted WilsonšÆ by giving pregame sideline passes to rappers Future and Bow Wow ā former boyfriends of the Seahawks quarterbackās wife, singer Ciara, and in the case of Future, the father of her young son. The Falconsā defense didnāt make Wilsonās day any easier, either.
Seattle opened the game with a 14-play, 89-yard TD march that took almost nine minutes off the clock and added a field goal on its next possession, but it was all downhill forš Wilson and the Seahawks from there.
After an early injury to Seahawks guard Germain Ifedi ended in his replacement, Rees Odhiambo, stepping on Wilsonās foot and forcing the quarterback to fall into the end zone for a safety early in the second quarter, the Falcons were off and running to their second plašyoff win over Seattle in as many meetings.
Wilson was sacked three times and ended up completing 17 of 30 passes for just 225 yards while suffering two interceptions, and one of his two TD passes came in garbage time withš¼ the Seahawks trailing 36-13 late.
āStuff happens,ā Wilson said of the safety. āItās a crazy game. It was supposed to be a pass play, but unfortunatelyļ潚ļæ½, it didnāt work out. Itās been a tough season.ā
The Seahawks also were their own worst enemy on speciaź¦°l teams with holding penalties on three separate kickoff returns and punt returns.
One of those holds ā on linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis in the second quarter ā proved pivotal š“because ią¶£t wiped out an 80-yard punt return by ageless former Falcon Devin Hester in the second quarter, when Seattle had a chance to build on a 10-7 lead.
The safety followed soź¦on after, beginning a decisive sequence in which the Falcons followed with a 99-yard TD march for a 19-10 lead and never looked back on the way to avenging a Week 6 loss in Seattle.
āThis is why you work hard and put in the time during the offseason and the summer,ā Ryan said. āThis feeź§ling right here.ā
