Rubik’s Cube creator sues maker of knockoff toy

They’re not kidding around.

The maker of the famed Rubꦜik’s Cube is suing the Ohio-based Duncan yo-yo maker for knocking off its famed 1980s brain-teaser with its own “Quick Cube.’’

Rubik’s Brand Limited is seeking a court-ordered injunction to force Duncan Toys Company to stop copying its trademarked toy, as well as financial damages of up to three times Duncan’s Quick Cube profits.

In a Manhattan federal court lawsuit, Rubik’s Brand says the rival toy, which can be found on Amazon.com and Toys “R” Us, is infringing on its trademark and “causing irreparable harm” by falsely leading people to believe they are buying a Rubik’s Cube when they are not.

“Consumers who expect to receive Plaintiff’s Rubik’s Cube puzzle, for which Plaintiff has developed a national and international reputation, will be disappointed when using Defendants’ imitation twist puzzle cube,” the lawsuit lamented.

The lawsuit says the Quick Cube “mimics the features and overall appearance’’ of the famous Rubik’s Cube, which is a 3-D puzzle invented in 1974 by a Hungarian professor of architecture, Ernő Rubik. The only differences between the two cubes are some changes in color, including a white outline instead of black, and “a slight rounding of the corners,” the lawsuit says.

Flambeau, Inc., the🔴 company which owns Duncan Toy🤡s, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Toys “R” Us, which is being sued for helping Duncan distribute the toy, also did not return a request for comment.
