SUNY board agrees to let some charters certify their own teachers

A SUNY Board of Trustees commiā™‹ttee voted Wednesday to let some charter schools certify their own teachers.

The new regulations will allow charters to fashion their own certification and teacher-training programs and make it easier for themšŸ”Æ šŸ§øto hire instructors.

Sector leaders lauded the vote, arguing that it will ease the effects of a teacher sš“‚ƒhortage.

ā€œIn the midst of a widely recogź¦†nized teacher shortage, SUNYā€™s vote today ensures that kids of color will have access to great teachers and exceptional educational outcomes,ā€ said Eva Moskowitz, founder and CEO of Success Academy.

Critics argued thaą·“t thš’‰°e move will dilute qualification standards and place teachers with uncertain pedigrees in classrooms.

State Education CommisšŸ·sioner MaryEllen Elia and Board of Regents Chancellor Betā™ty Rosa both criticized the change.
