President Trump on Monday praised Congress for acting to reopen the federal government — but stopped short of promising to support lawmakers’ expected bipartisan deal on immigration reform.
“I am pleased Democrats in Congress have come to their senses and are now willing to fund our great military, border patrol, first responders and insurance for vulnerable children,” Trump said in a statement read by a spokeswoman.
“As I have said once the government is funded my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration. We’ll make a long-term deal on immigration if it is good for the country.”
Earlier Monday, the Senate approved a temporary spending bill on a bi-partisan basis after GOP leaders promised to address the fate of the Dreamers, who were brought to the country as children and had been protected from deportation by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program before Trump killed it.
