Jets take crucial step in deciding if Baker Mayfield is the answer

The Jets got their first chance to talk with Oklahoma star quarterback Baker Mayfield at the Senior Bowl this week, SI.com reports.

Mayfield told the website that , along with the Bills, Dolphins and Saints.

“That’s the only upside for me [being here],” Mayfield told the website. “I’m confident I can show exactly what I’m about, how much I care about football and how I’d do anything to win. And not just that. Put me on a board and let me show you how much I know about the game. Let me show that I can pick information up, take it and run with it. Getting in front of these people was so important, even bigger than the three years of film I put together.”

There is little for the Heisman Trophy winner to prove on the field Saturday at the Senior Bowl, and it’s unclear if he is playing after showing up late because of an issue with his mother. But the Oklahoma star may have to prove to potential draft suitors that he won’t be a cautionary tale.

Mayfield was arrested for public intoxication last year. He also had a couple of unsportsmanlike incidents on the field: throwing a ball at a TCU player during warmups and grabbing his crotch during a win over Kansas. Still, Mayfield is considered a lock first-round pick and is expected to be the fourth quarterback taken after USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Wyoming’s Josh Allen.

“I want to prove the type of person I am,” Mayfield said. “There’s a media portrayal of me and there are the people in the program who know who I am.

“I’m excited for the next few months. I’m gonna give my best because that’s going to put me in the best position moving forward. The stuff I don’t like about the process, I’ll deal with it. I can suck it up for two months. I’ve dealt with worse.”

The Jets have the sixth pick of the draft and are in desperate need for a quarterback of the future.

The Jets as their offensive line coach and run game coordinator, ESPN.com reports. Dennison was fired after one season with Buffalo and has also been the offensive coordinator in Houston and Denver.

The Bills led the NFL in rushing last season, averaging 164.4 yards per game — nearly 15 more per game than the next-best club. The Jets were 12th at 112.6, and there was tension behind the scenes because of former offensive coordinator John Morton’s pass-happy play-calling. They are expected to promote quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates to offensive coordinator.
