Sen. Chuck Schumer wants Marriott hotel officials to buy new passports for people whose passport numbers were stolen by hackers in a massive data breach.
The hoą“spitality company should āimmediatelyā notify customešrs who have the greatest risk of having their identity stolen and then foot the $110 bill for a new passport, should the client request it, the New York Democrat said Sunday.
āRight now, the clock is ticking to minimize the risk customers face and one way to do this is to request a new passport and make it harder for thieves to paint that full iź§ dentity picture,ā Schumer said.
Marriott disclosed Friday that hackers swiped the persź§onal data, such as credit card and passport numbers, of as many as 500 million guests of Starwood chain properties, which include the posh W hotels and Sheraton and Westin Hotels &amź§p; Resorts.
The disclosure triggered probes š¼from the FBI and New Yorkš Attorney General Barbara Underwood. The State Department hasnāt contacted the company, Marriott said.
Marriott said they would reimburse customers who fall prey to passport fraud related to the breach and they set up a website and call centšer for customers who believe they are at risk.
