The Packers’ search for their next coach continues, even though Aaron Rodgers appears to be sold on the team’s temporary replacement.
Following the firing of Mike McCarthy in early December after 13 seasons, Green Bay turned to offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as its interim coach. As far as the quarterback is concerned, he could be the right man for the top job.
“We want to play for Joe and give him the best opportunity possible,” Rodgers said Sunday, .
That means Rodgers and the Packers will be trying to win Sunday for Philbin, whose tryout will come to a close when the Packers take on the Lions at Lambeau. Green Bay’s front office is already looking into other prospects, including Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano.
“They wouldn’t mind having a quarterback guru in to help run the show, Jim Caldwell, the former Colts coach and also former Lions coach, has interviewed, sources say,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport . “This is the first known interview for the Green Bay Packers, and shortly after that, we found out the second, Chuck Pagano, another former Colts coach.”
Caldwell and Pagano were both fired at the end of the 2017 season from Detroit and Indianapolis, respectively.
While Rodgers will not be involved in the interview process, per Packers brass, former staffers under McCarthy’s regime have already voiced their opinions about where No. 12 stands within the organization.
“Aaron Rodgers has been the head coach for the last nine years,” ex-assistant Winston Moss said on Fox’s “NFL Kickoff” earlier this month, before adding, “Just joking, just joking.”
