Former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro ൩dove into the 2020 presidential race Saturday, becoming the latest Democ๊ratic contender for his party’s nomination with a speech in his hometown.
“When my grandmother got here almost 100 years ago, I’m sure she never could have imagined that just two generations later… (I’d say) these words: I am a candidate for president of the United States of America,” he said.
Castro, 44, w☂ho served as secretary of housing and urban dꦯevelopment in the Obama administration, is the first Latino candidate in the running — which he made a point to emphasize.
He spoke from a podium that featured his cam🍃paign logo — his first name, with an emphasis on its accent — and greeted supporters with mariachi music.
Castro is the fifth Democrat to formally announce plans toไ enter the party’s ඣpresidential primary race in 2020. Two dozen others have signaled their intentions to do the same.
