Thief breaks NYPD cop’s leg to escape: authorities

A thief made his getaway on the Upper West Side Sunday morning after kicking a cop in his leg and breaking his shin bone, police said.

The thief, along with his female accomplice, were caught stealing cosmetics from a Duane Reade on Broadway, near E. 94th Street, just before 5 a.m., according to police.

As the officer was talking to the pair of crooks the man kicked the cop and ran off, police said.

The woman was immediately arrested, and her charges were pending, the NYPD said.

The injured cop was heading into surgery Sunday morning for a broken tibia, according to the NYPD. They were still searching for the thief who assaulted the cop.

Workers at the 24-hour drug store referred all questions to their corporate offices.

A woman, who lives nearby and asked not to be named, told The Post she heard the police presence early Sunday.

“I was woken up from the helicopter overhead for two hours,” she said. “It was so loud and kept me up! So I called the precinct to ask how much longer it’ll happen it was so loud. It was annoying.”

Howard Pulitzer, a lifelong resident of the neighborhood, said the incident was “a little concerning.”

“Hopefully they catch the guy,” he said. “But It’s a safe neighborhood, it’s gotten better.”
