Like a cherry on top of this year’s “Keanussance,” Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that it’s reviving “The Matrix” franchise with a fourth installment — starring, of course, Keanu Reeves as his iconic character “Neo,”
The beloved 54-year-old actor’s on-screen flame, Carrie-Anne Moss, 51, will also join the actor in the forthcoming flick, playing Neo’s love interest, Trinity.
Writer and director Lana Wachowski — who both wrote and directed the previous three “Matrix” movies with her sister Lilly Wachowski — is set to take the reigns of the forဣthcoming flick, with the help of writers Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
“We could not be more excited to be ღre-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚrix’ universe.”
Production begins in early 2020, sources told the ouౠtlet.
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chanc🍒e to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski said.
The news marks Reeves’ second reboot of a cherished franchise this year, with a third installment of ൩“Bill & Ted” underway after nearly three decades.
The mysterious actor — known for his tragic personal life — has had a busy year so far, with the arrival of the highly reviewed “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” playing comedian Ali Wong’s romantic interest in Netflix’s “Always Be My Maybe,” and voicing the daredevil in Pixar’s “Toy Story 4.”
Reeves was also recently praised by adoring fans for politely respecting women’s boundaries by hovering instead of touching them in photos.
