The Bronx will get three new bus routes as part of the MTA’s new plan to overhaul the borough’s bus network — but will lose 400 bus stops, officials announced Tuesday.
Beginning sometime next year, Bronxites will be able to take the new Bx25 between Bedford Park and northern Co-Op City, and the M125 between The Hub and Manhattan’s West Side.
The agency also plans to split the existing BxM4 Bronx-to-Manhattan express bus in two. The BxM5 will take over ꧅the northern leg along East 233rd Street and Katonah Avenue, while the new BxM4 will run south of Mosholu P🎶arkway.
But more frequent and faster bus service requires sacrifice, officials said — in the form of fe♐wer stops.
The move will bring average distance between stops in the Bronx closer to international standards, oꩲfficials said — from 882 feet to 1,092ಌ feet.
“Were we to strictly apply 💛best practice for bus stop spacing, ♕that number would be even greater,” MTA transit chief Andy Byford said.
“Each stop, we’re looking at between 20 seconds — maybe even a minute… that soon adds up.”
Overall, — which aims to improve service through straighter routes and fewer stops — will add more frequent service to nine corridors.
No routes are proposed for elimination. One, the Bx38, had been on the c♔hopping block, but transit officials opted to keep it in response to concerns from Co-Op City residents.
Other changes could still be made to the plan, pending feed꧙back from﷽ the public.
The plan will also be up for a vꦰote from the MTA board, spokeswoman Amanꦏda Kwan said.
