A volcano erupted on Satsumaio Island in southwestern Japan Saturday, sending a plume of ash more than 3,000 feet into the sky.
There were no injuries reported in the minor eruption, which occurred around 5:35 p.m. local time, .
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the alert level for the volcano on the sparsely populated island in Kagoshima Prefecture to 2 from 1 on a scale of 5, Reuters reported.
The warning highlighted the likelihood of flying rocks and lava flows within a 1-kilometer radius of the crater.
It was the first eruption on the island since June 2013, according to the agency. Small eruptions could continue there.
The agency issued a level-2 alert for the volcano in March 2018 but lowered it to 1 the following month.
