President Trump called on Iran Sunday night to release a former FBI agent who went missing in the Middle Eastern country 12 years ago.
“If Iran is able to turn over to the U.S. kidnapped former FBI Agent Robert A. Levinson, who has been missing in Iran for 12 years, it would be a very positive step,” .
Levinson, whom many had given up for dead, shot back into headlines Saturday once it was reported by the Associated Press that Iran admitted in a United Nations filing that his case is currently “ongoing.”
The former agent vanished in 2007 after being apprehended on Iran’s Kish Island while on a secret mission for the CIA.
In November 2010, video emerged of Levinson wearing an orange jumpsuit and pleading to be released and return to the United States.
Efforts to bring Levinson back home have been impeded by the lack of formal relations between the two countries.
In the second half of Trump’s tweet, the president addressed Iran’s efforts to enrich uranium.
“At the same time, upon information & belief, Iran is, & has been, enriching uranium. THAT WOULD BE A VERY BAD STEP!”
The country has been steadily moving away from uranium compliance levels set in the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and a group of world powers.
