Gun violence shot up 177% in July, NYPD says

This ๊July saw nearly three times the number of shootings it di🐼d last year, new NYPD stats show.

There were 244 shooting incidents for the month, compared to just 88 in July 2019 — an increase of 177 percent, data shows.

The figure comes amid a stark rise in gunplay for the entire year, which as of July 31 has risen 72 percent over 2019 — 772 ve🐭rsus 450.

Murders increased 59 percent for the month over July 2019 with 54 versus 34. The number of burglaries꧅ also rose to 1,297 over 989, a 39 percent increase. The number of auto thefts shot up to 892 from 583 or 53 percent citywide.

“The NYPD has initiated a new plan to simultaneously increase its targeted mobilization and engage with community partners,” the department said in a news release. “This includes a series of Stop the Violence anti-gun town hall events throughout the city, with an event on Thursday in the Bronx.”

The department also said its efforts to stop the surging violence include moving officers to areas seeing upticks in shootings and calling on cops “to engage with residents at the grassroots level to focus on the problems and solve them locally,” the release said.

The NYPD has also been “gathering timely intelligence, analyzing crime trends and disseminating preventative measures to stop New Yorkers from being victimized and ensure safety for all,” the release says.

“Amid the ongoing challenges of these times, the NYPD’s commitment to public safety never wavers,” NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said in the press release. “Our men and women officers represent the best of the policing professioꦚn and work every day alongside those they serve in an ongoing joint mission to protect life, prevent crime and build safer neighborhoods for everyone across our great city.”
