Juanita Holmes to become NYPD’s first female chief of patrol

NYPD Chief Juanita Holmes was named the department’s new chief of patr💎ol Thursday, making her the first woman to hold the position in the law enf🍬orcement agency’s 175-year history.

Holmes – whose promotion takes effect Friday — replaces outgoing chief of patrol Fausto Pichardo who abruptly resigned earlier this month following what police sources have said was frustrations with micromanagement from Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea made the historic announcement during de Blasio’💫s City Hℱall press briefing Thursday.

“She has walked the walk and talks the talk,” Shea said of Holmes, 56. “She understands this city. She understands the importance of neighborhood policing.”

Holmes joined the NYPD in 1987 and bega🦂n her cꦦareer on patrol in the 101st Precinct.

She served as commanding officer of the Domestic Violence Unit before being promoted to a two-star chief in charge of Patrol Borough Queens North in 2ꦫ016 – then becoming the NYPD’s first female African-American borough commander.

Holmes, who has 16 immediate family members employed by the NYPD, including her son, brother, and five sisters, retired from th♎e department in December 2018 to join the private sector as Global Head of Corporꦫate Security at BNY Mellon. She rejoined the department a year later.

Last month, Holmes ag𒈔ain made history within the department when she was appointed to the position o👍f Chief of Collaborative Policing and officially received her third star.

That promo꧑tion made Holmes the highest ranking African-American female officer in NYPD history as no other Africa🅘n-American woman has ever risen to the rank of three-star chief.

She remains the highest-ranking African-American woman on the force🉐.

A police source told The Post that Holmes is close to de Blasio’s wife First Lady Chirlane McCray and has been rumored to get a top post with a push from the mayor after she rejoi🍒ned the NYPD.

Holmes, during the Thursday press briefing, said tꦚhat she was “grateful and humbled” to continue serviꦉng in the NYPD.

“I’m just very 🍷happy to h🍌ave this opportunity – my entire career path has been patrol-oriented. I stayed out there. That’s where I thought I had the most impact,” she said.

Holmes added, “Now, being the highest ranking of patrol, it’s overwhelming, but truly humbling and I’m very grate꧒ful to have this oppꦕortunity.”

She said that she hopes to ✅restore “trust and🥃 faith in our community and our police department.”

De Blasio cheered the promotion of Holmes, saying that she “is ready and she has proven over the years that she’s the right person for a crucial moment ꩵin our history.”

“Just the experience alone reco👍mmends her for this role,” de Blasio said.

“The commitment of you and your family members to this city and to the NYPD — I’ve never seen an example so extraordinary of one family giving so much,” the mayor said, adding, “You are being called to leadership at a particularly important time, but that is a time also when so many great things can happen and a transformative moment.”
