The woman found dead in her Bronx bedroom this week was bludgeoš ned to death by her adult son in a jealousy-fueled rage, cops said.
Steven Castro, 40, was busted in connection to thše slaying of his 66-year-old mother, Carmen Aponte, whose daughter found her body inside an apartment on Seneca Avenue near Faile Street in Hunts Point around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.
Castro — who has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of weapon — is accused of striking his mother with an unspecified blunt object, cops said.
Emergency Medical Service workers pronounced Apoš½nte dead on the scene.
Cops said jealousy was the motive for the slaying, but had no furtheršÆ details.
A 50-year-old next-door neighbor, who only gave his first name, J.P., said his wife reported hearing “a thud.”
“She said, āDid you hear that?ā I walked over and I listened through the door,” he said. “I didnāt hear nothing. Within an hour or so, I heard the daughter scream. Soon after the cops came — flooded [the hallway].ā
J.P. said he never noticed anything abnormal about tį¦he family.
“They were a regular family. They werenāt like hideous, horrible people,” he said. “[The family] didnāt seem like they were untrusting. My [two] daughters never said they had a problem with them.”
Neighbor ļ»æZoila Castillo, 47, said she knew the family for 20 yeš«ars and remembered Aponte and Castro as having a good relationship. They would even go to the supermarket together, she said.
“He was with his mother all the time — when he was around, you would see them together,” Castillo said. āYou know [how] sometimes you will feel [some] kind of tension? No, never [between them].ā
Castro “was a quiet person,” Castillo said.
Lourdes Adams, 59, whoź¦ knew Aponte for morš¼e than 25 years, said the woman retired last year after working at a nearby school, PS 48, as a paraprofessional.
āFor many years she was working in the school. She was helping kids inside the school, outside the school,” Adams said. āThis was a surprise to everybody here.
Castro’s arraignment was pending Thursday afternoon. The Bronx district attorney’s office said he was in the hospital, though police could not confirm that detail.
