Two rockets strike Green Zone in Baghdad

Tﷺwo rockets were fired at the area of Baghdad that houses the US embassy and ဣIraqi government buildings late Saturday, causing damage but no casualties, officials said. 

❀One of the projectiles that was fired into Iraq’s so-called Green Zone was intercepted in the air and destroyed by an anti-missile defense system, while the other struck near a national monument, damaging two civilian vehicles, the , citing the Iraqi military. 

The Green Zone is a frequent target of missilꦯe and drone attacks that American officials blame on Iranian-backed militant groups operating in Iraq.

The militias have set a New Year’s Eve deadline for the US to withdraw all of its troops from the c📖ountry. 

Saturday’s attack came on the 10th anniversary of the US troop withdrawal from Iraq after the 2003 overthrow oဣf dictator Saddam Hussein. 

America reinstated some forces at the behest of the Iraqi governmen🍸t a few years later amid a threat from ISIS.&nbꦡsp;

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Saturday’s rockets, but🧸 Iran also has pledged to avenge the death of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US-directed drone atta🎀ck near the Baghdad airport on Jan. 2, 2020. 

Officials ha🥂ve warned of increased attacks on US troops in Iraq and Syria in the coming weeks ahead of the anniversary of ꦺthe killings of Soleimani as well as Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
