Florida Democrat gov candidate Charlie Crist’s campaign chief Austin Durrer arrested for domestic violence
The campaign manager overseeing former Rep. Charlie Crist’s bid to topple Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was arrested for domestic violence this week, according to a report.
Austin Durrer was busted at his home in Cambridge, Maryland on Tuesday and now faces second-degree assault charges.
Crist’s longtime aide was also ordered to vacate the residence he owns with his wife and surrender his guns as part of a $10,000 bail package in Dorchester County, .
Crist’s campaign abruptly announced that Durrer was resigning to address a family issue Thursday but did not allude to the arrest.
“Austin Durrer has departed the campaign to focus on a family matter,” Crist campaign spokesperson Samantha Ramirez told Florida Politics on Thursday without elaborating.
Durrer, who began working with the Democratic candidate in 2016, is slated for trial in early December and faces up to 10 years in prison.

Fox reported that Durrer was arrested at a residence he owned with his wife, Janet Whisman, Chief Development Officer at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.
The controversy rocked Crist’s flagging campaign just weeks before Floridians cast their votes for governor next month.
Polls show DeSantis with a comfortable lead heading into the contest.

Crist, who secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination with a decisive primary victory over Nikki Fried, previously served as the Sunshine State’s governor as a Republican before leaving the party and repositioning himself as a progressive.
A new poll from Florida Atlantic University released Monday had DeSantis up by 11 points over Crist with less than a month to go before election day.
The Republican firebrand has vaulted to prominence in recent years and is considered a top contender for a 2024 presidential run.
