Georgia repeated as national champions but will not have a second consecutive corresponding White Hoāuse visšit.
The Bulldogs announced Tuesday that they are declining Joe Biden’s invitation to attend what is being deemed “College Athlete Day” on June 12.
āThe University of Georgia first received on May 3 an invitation for the Bulldog football team to visit the White House on June 12,ā Georgia’s athletic association said in a statement. āUnfortunately, the date suggested is not feasible given the student-athlete calendar and time of year.ā
Several āmonths back, there were gripes among Georgąµ©ia supporters that the team had not been invited sooner.
āIt is our hope that this repeat championsš°hip team can join the many teams prior that šhave been honored by the President,ā to the White House in January, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
In February, a President Biden official said the White House ālooks forward to welcomingā Georgia, ābut the invitation did not aź§rrive until last week.
The Biden White House just finished smoothing over a controversy in which first lady Jill Biden floated the idea of inviting Iowa’s women’s basketball team, which had finished as runner-up to LSU in the national championship last month.
āI know weāll have the champions come to the White House, we always do,ā the first lady said after watching the game. āSo, we hope LSU will come. But, you know, Iām going to tell Joe I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good gšame.ā
LSU star Angel Reese slammed the first lady’s idea.
āIf we were to lose, we would not be getting invited to the White House,ā Reese said. ź©²āRemember she made a comment about how both teams should be invited because of sportsmanship. Iām like, āAre youā saying that because of what I did?ā
āStuffā¦ like that bothers me because you are a woman at the end of the day, white, black, Mexican, it doesnāt matter. Youāre supposed to be standing behind us before anythingš.ā
Ultimately, after declining to commit to attending the White House visit, Reese said she wouldź¦æ go with LSU when they areš honored on May 26.
