NYC hospital officers indicted for beating man, leaving him unconscious on the street
Three members of the Big Apple’s public hospitals police force have been indicted for allegedly beating a man outside a Manhattan medical facility last year, and then trying to cover up the assault, prosecutors said Monday.
The NYC Health + Hospitals officers — Raymond Green, 55; Patrick James, 54; and Shahed Khan, 38 — allegedly attacked the unidentified 33-year-old victim because he refused to leave Bellevue Hospital after medical staff had cleared him to go home, according to a statement from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
For the alleged beating — which left the victim unconscious on the pavement — the three have been charged with one count each of official misconduct, Bragg said.
Green, of Manhattan, has also been charged with second-degree assault, while James, of Illinois, faces two additional counts of falsifying business records.
James and Khan, of Queens, were allegedly escorting the drunk man out at about 9:50 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2022, when he fell against a pillar outside the hospital, the DA’s Office said.
The pair tried to rouse the man, but he kicked at the officers and laid back down, the statement said.
That’s when James allegedly began to drag the man off the property.
While James was pulling him away, Green allegedly stepped on his ankle, prosecutors said.
The victim kicked him, too, so Green allegedly stomped on him and knocked him flat on the ground, according to the DA’s Office.
Then Green kicked him once more before picking him up and slamming into the concrete twice, prosecutors alleged.
Witnesses tried to intervene, but the three officers left the man slumped unconscious on the sidewalk, the DA said.
He stayed there for about 15 minutes, then tried to get back into the hospital.
The officers blocked his way, and the victim eventually collapsed to the ground.
James allegedly denied the beating when his supervisor showed up and he filed paperwork that didn’t mention the physical force at all, Bragg said.
“A man who went into Bellevue Hospital was allegedly assaulted and left on the street,” Bragg said in the statement.
“Furthermore, some of the defendants allegedly attempted to deny and conceal the use of force to evade accountability,” he said. “All New Yorkers must be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their needs, especially by the people who are supposed to protect and keep them safe.”
