Man electrocuted after plunging into club’s waterfall during New Year’s Eve party
A 33-year-old man was electrocuted after jumping into a man-made waterfall at a Brazilian nightclub to cool off during a New Year’s Eve celebration.
The unfortunate partygoer, identified as Marco Túlio Bomtempo, allegedly went into cardiac arrest resulting from the electric shock and died at club Bothanic — a music venue in the city of Brasilia — just hours into the new year on Monday.
J🦂oao Cunha, a friend of Bomtempo who was also at the club to ring in the new year, that the reveler had announced that he was going to dive into the artificial waterfall to cool off on his way out of the party.
Cuhna said Bomtempo stripped off his shirt and handed it to a woman who was with him, before t☂aking the fateful plunge.
“As he jumped, I saw that he didn’t say anything else,” the friend recalled to the news outlet.
Cuhna then followed Bomtempo into the fountain and was also electrocuted, butꦉ a good Samaritan managed to pull him to safety.
First responders who raced to the scene removed Bomtempo from the waterfall and reportedly spent theꩵ next 50 minutes trying to revive him before pronouncing him de💃ad.
Bomtempo’s official cause of death will be determined by the Legal Medical Institute. The Civil Police has also launched an investigation into the fatality.
The owners of the club expressed their condolences to Bomtempo’s family in a statement to G1. They stressed that they had only rented the space for the New Year’s Eve celebration and “did not participate in any way” in the organization of the event.
They described the waterfall where Bomtempto met his untimely end as “decorativ♒e, with a single, clear and indisputable purpose of making the environment visually pleasant for everyone present. It was never used for bathing, because it clearly did not serve that purpose.”
During the dozens of events that had been staged at Bothanic last🔜 year, no one had ever considered jumping into the waterfall, the owners added.
“The venue deeply regrets what happened, expresses deep regret for the death a𝔉nd offers solidarity to the family of young Marco Túlio Bomtempo,” t🦂he statement continued.
The organizers of the ill-fated celebration rushed to defend themselves by pointing out that the waterfall “already exsisted as an integral part of the space.”
“It is important to highligh🃏t that it was not the organizers of the event who built the fountain, it already existed there and was used in all Bothanic events without there having been any previous accident,” the party planners stated.
