Jon Rahm’s poor putting ruins his quest for Masters repeat

AUGUSTź¦A, Ga. ā€” This was nšŸŒ ot the green jacket defense Jon Rahm had in mind.

The 29-year-old Spaniard, whoā€™s on the LIV Golf tour, followed up his 2ā•023 Masters victory with an unmemorable 9-over-par finish this week.

ā€œThereā€™s a lot of things that contributed to me not having my best week, and one of them I think was obviously on the greens,ā€ Rahm said. ā€œI never really had the paceāœ± of the greens, and a couple too many three-putts.ā€™ā€™

Rahm had a stunning eight three-putts in his four rounds and had a tā™“otal of 130 pušŸ…·tts for the tournament.

Itā€™s impossible to win a Masters with š”‰ą¦“those numbers.

Asked what this week meant to him as the defšŸŽending champion and hosting the championā€™s dinner Tuesday night, Rahm sounded wistful.

ā€œItā€™s harder to talk about it when Iā€™ve played this bad,ā€™ā€™ he said. ā€œItā€™s been nice to have some receptions walking up to some teešŸ…·s no matter what my score was and seeing the appreciation. But when you donā€™t have your best week, itā€™s hard to have to stay now to put the jacket on somebody else [when I] never really ever have a chance.ā€™ā€™

Rory McIlroy has now played 16 career Masterā™‘s without a win.

This week was his 10th Masters since it became the last leg of theš“†‰ carš“†eer Grand Slam he needs to become the sixth player ever to complete it.

And on Sunday, he again went hošŸŽ‰me empty-handed, never having been in cź¦ontention.

He shot 73 on Sunday and finished 4-over for the šŸŒŠtournament.

ā€œI donā€™t reaź¦lly know what to say,ā€™ā€™ McIlroy said afterward. ā€œI just sort of felt like my game was OK and managed it pretty well, but obviously Friday was a really tough day, and losing five shots sort of put me in a pretty difficult position going into the weekend. Once you get seven or eight back going into the weekend here, itā€™s hard to make up that ground.ā€™ā€™

He said he needs ā€œto take aź¦— little bit of time and reflect on this week and what I did well, what I didnā€™t do so well, and sort of try to make a plan for the next few months.ā€™ā€™

What a week for Neal Shipley, the 22-year-old Pittsburgh native, who played college golf at James MadisšŸ§øon and is now a grad student at Ohio State.

He ź©²was the only amateur to make the cut, which assured him as the lošŸ„€w.

And he was paireź¦d with Tiger Woods in Sundayā€™s final round.

ā€œPlaying with Tiger, Sunday at the Masters, the whole week, I thišŸŒ¼nk I have to win one of these things to kind of top this week,ā€™ā€™ Shipley said after shooting a 73 on Sunday to finish 1šŸ§ø2-over for the week. ā€œDefinitely been a dream week, but looking forward to being out here [as a pro] soon hopefully.ā€™ā€™

Shipley earned a spot in the field this week as the U.S. Amateur runner-up last yeļ·½ar. Heā€™s gone from little-known college golfer to a week like tš’‰°his.

ā€œItā€™s certainšŸŒly been quite the journey,ā€™ā€™ he said.

Shipley shot 80 in the third round Saturday,šŸ¦© which ą¼’he said, ā€œIs never fun.ā€™ā€™

ā€œI wasnā€™t too pleaš“€sed after the round,ā€™ā€™ he went on. ā€œWe went quickly to the pršŸ’«actice facility to get some work in and my caddie came up to me and said, ā€˜Hey, guess who we are going to be paired with tomorrow?ā€™

ā€œI was just like, ā€˜No way itā€™s Tiger.ā€™ And he said, ā€˜Yeah.ā€™ I got pretty excited, and thatā€™s when the emotions turned around. I wasnā€™t too nervous, but when we got here this morning and saw Tiger on the range, it was like, ā€˜Oh, my goą¦“sh, this is actually happening.ā€™

ā€œI definišŸ¦‹tely think itā€™s one of my more relaxed rounds of the week. Tiger made me feel really welcomed. I mean, he was cool, chatting it up. Just kind of a cool, like, casual round with Tiger, you know, other than youā€™re here at the Masters.ā€™ā€™

Three-time green jacket winner Phil Mickelson, at age 53, closed out his 31st Masters shoošŸŒƒting a 2-overšŸŒ 74 to finish 8-over for the week.

Mickelson ź¦Æhas now made 101ź§Ÿ cuts in major championships, the third most in the history of the game behind only Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

ā€œIf youā€™re going to contend on the weekend, youā€™ve got to get there,ā€™ā€™ Mickelson said. ā€œThatā€™s part of the battle. Thereā€™s no reason why I cannot get back and play at a really highā™• level. I didnā€™t shoot tāœØhe scores this week, but it wasnā€™t that far off.ā€™ā€™

Shane Lowry was paired with Mickelson and marvā™eled at the skills he still possesses.

ā€œI love playing golf with Phil,ā€ Lowry said. ā€œHe hit some shots that Iā€™m kind of right there enjoying as a spectator more than anything else. When I saw the draw last night, I was ź¦excited to go out and plš’ay a Masters Sunday with him.

ā€œHe lived up to his name. He hit some unbelievable shots. He hit a shot from over in the trees on the 8th hole I šŸ¬think only he would go for, let alone pull off, but it was good fun.ā€
