Mets, Phillies add new layer to rivalry with first-ever playoff meeting

PHILADELPHIAź¦š ā€” The Mets have faced that other NL East nemesis, the Braves, in the pā™layoffs, but the Phillies are something new.

When Saturdayā€™s Game 1 oąµ²f the NLDS is playšŸŒ ed at Citizens Bank Park, it will mark thą± e first time the division rivals have met in the postseason.

The last time the Mets faced a division foe in the postseason was in 1999, when they lost the NLCā™”S ąµ²to the Braves.

Mets postseason opponents since then: Giants, Cardinals, Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals, Dą¼’odgers, Cubs, Royals, Giants, Padres and Brewers.

ā€œPhiladelphia-Mets playoff baseball is going to be intense,ā€ Brandon Nimmo said. ā€œBoth fan basesšŸ”Æ, and this is exactly what you want.ā€

The familiarity factor between the teams shouldšŸŒø only add toź¦« the intensity.

The Mets showed they could hoāœØld their own against the Phillies, going 4-3 against them in their final two series this season.

ā€œI think weā€™ve seen it just with the rivalry that we have, playing in some tight games and whatnot, this place gets loud,ā€ David Peterson said. ā€œAnd thatā€™s what you want. You want that playoff atmosphere.ā€œI think weā€™re ready for it, itā€™sā™‰ exciting. Hopefully, like the Mets fans always do, they will travā™›el well and weā€™ll have some support in the building.ā€

The ā€œPlayoff Pumpkinā€ that Pete Alonso unveiled in the clubhouse after Thursdayā€™s wild-card-series clinching victory in MilwašŸŒŠukee was the latest Mets rallying object, joining Grimace and the ā€œOMGā€ sign that is displayed to celebrate home runs.

ā€œWe have been through a lot and people are giving credit to so many different people,ā€ manager Carlos Mendoza said. ā€œI see it as we have got good playersšŸŽ‰, we have got great people and weā€™re just going to continue to have fun and ride the wave and see what happešŸŒŒns.ā€
