Drunk driver faces huge bill, 16-months in jail after crashing into cars, refusing to spend $10 on cab
A drunk driver who ran five red lights and smashed into two cars has dodged jail after claiming he didn’t want to fork out $10 on a taxi fare.
Declan Muers, 27, had bđđeen boozing at a nightclub but left in a rage in the early hours and decided to drive the two miles home.
Police dashcam footage shows Muers hurâ¨tling through Nottingham ciđ ēty centre at around 4am on February 18.
A police patrol car đēspotted him driving erratically on Maid Marian Way and followed him as he ran five red lights.
Muers continued to career through the city before losing control of his blue Volkswagen Scirocco and crđashing into two parked cars on Hungerhill Road.
The yob tried to flee on foot but was caught by officđers a short distance away.
A breathalyser test showed he had 49 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcęĻg.
Mueârs was taken to the Queenâs Medical Centre for a cut head before being arrested and taken into custđĨody.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop when required đĨby a police constable and drink-driving.
Muers, of Mapperley, received a 16-męĻĢonth sentence, suspended for two years at Nottingham Cârown Court on Monday (7/10).
He was also banned from driving for two years, given a four-month curfew and told to complete 10 Rehabilitation Activity Requiremeđēnt days.
PC Fraser Heaton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: âMuers showed a clear disregard for the safety of others by driving dangerously through a city centre in poor weather
conditions.
ââHe was in no fit state to be behind the wheel of a car and it is fortunate he didnât cause harm to another road user or pedestrian.
âHe was also extremely lucky not to have sustained a more serious injury himself after losing control and crashiđŗng into two parked vehicles.
âDuring his polę§ice interview, he told us heâd been drinking in a nightclub and left after becoming angry about something that had happened.
âHe should have got a taxi home but seemingly didnât want to pay a farâąe.
âNow heâs paid a heftier price in court with the loss of his driver’s license.”
