Deonte Banks gives up on play in embarrassing scene in Giants’ blowout loss to Eagles

The effort of Giants cornerback Deonte Banks can be called into question when he showed no interest in tackling Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts on a scramble in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 28-3 loss.

Hurts took off down the right sideline on a third-and-7 play to start the fourth quarter and Banks basically allowed him t෴o rℱun unimpeded past him and out of bounds.

The 16-yard run extended the drive and ultimately led to Hurts’ second rushing score of the game, a one-yard touchdown that provided the final score.

“I had a bad play,’’ Banks said. “I think I could have made it, but sometimes when you’re in the moment you just th🅘ink like, ‘Nah,’ but I thinꦕk could have made the tackle.’’

Banks said he thought Hurts might slide.

The quarterback instead stayed upright and moved up the sideline before stepping out at the Giants’ 16-yard line. Five plays later, the Eagles had their touchdown.

This is the second time this season Banks has not 🅰given maximum effort on a play.

He failed to tackle Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in Week 3 on a ౠsimilar play.

Banks did not give maximum effort in atꦬtempting to tackle Lamb, who took t🎃he short pass to the house for a 55-yard touchdown.

Longtime Giants defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said at the time that he “liked nothing about it” and Banks conceded it was a “bad finish by me.”

Henderson appeared to be yelling at Banks on Sunday after the play Sunday since the second-year cornerback gave up on the play in front of the Giants’ sideline.

“We’ll take a look at all that stuff and whatever we ne🐠ed to address, we’ll address,’’ head coach Brian Daboll said. “I’m not going to get into the sideline or coaching part of it. But, none of it was good enough.’’
