Grizzlies’ Jaylen Wells stretchered off after suffering scary injury on flagrant foul

Tuesday’s Grizzlies-Hornets game on Tuesday night came with a scary moment late in the second quarter.

The Grizzlies’ Jaylen Wells fell to the floor under the basket and broke his right wrist after getting fouled hard by Charlotte’s KJ Simpson on a dunk with a little over a minute left in the half, later getting stretchered off the court at Spectrum Center on Tuesday night.

Wells was “awake, alert and moving his extremities” as he got medical treatment after leaving the game.

The Grizzlies rookie caught an outlet pass from Ja Morant behind the Hornets’ defense and slammed the ball home before Simpson came from behind and ran into his lower body, leading to an incredibly hard and awkward fall where Wells hit both his right hand and head on the court.

Both teams quickly converged under the basket but were stopped before tempers could boil over.

Medical and training staff personnel came over to help Wells, who lay on the court.

“Go Grizz,” he wrote in a caption of his story.

“It puts everything into perspective seeing that situation and to see Jaylen there,” interim Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo said. “He’s an incredibly tough kid and had a great season.”

“It’s tough. I threw the pass and turned around and was doing our little touchdown celebration. When I got there, the first thing I saw was blood, and I’ve got a weak stomach,” Grizzlies star Ja Morant said. “We’ve just got to stay with him and keep praying for him. It’s next man up. Obviously that hurts. Guys will just have to be ready.”

Wells, a second-round pick in last year’s draft, came into the night averaging 10.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in his first NBA season.

Memphis won the game 124-100.
