And 2025 was the year it hit for McIlroy, who defeated England’s Justin Rose in a one-hole playoff after both finished at 11-under for the week.

The day was a rollercoaster for McIlroy, who opened the final round with a double bogey on the par-4 first hole, but settled down by making back-to-back birdies on No. 3 and No. 4.

Rose, 44, parred on the 18th hole while a birdie putt sealed the victory for McIlroy, who last won a major 11 years ago at the 2014 PGA Championship.

“There were points in my career where I didn’t know if I would have this nice garment over my shoulders,’’ McIlroy said after winning his first green jacket. “I certainly didn’t make it easy. I was nervous. It was one of the toughest days I’ve ever had on the golf course.”

The newly minted five-time major champion took in the emotional scene Sunday with wife Erica Stoll and their 4-year-old daughter, Poppy.

McIlroy is one of six golfers ever to complete the sport’s Grand Slam, joining the ranks of Gene Sarazen, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, who congratulated his friend Sunday night.

“Welcome to the club @McIlroyRory. Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you’re a part of history. Proud of you!” Woods, a five-time Masters winner, .

Woods, a 15-time major winner who last won at Augusta in 2019, missed this year’s tournament as he continues his recovery from an Achilles injury.
