Kyle Tucker, Cubs could initiate extension talks this summer before he enters free agency

There’s no indication the Cubs are discussing a potential extension yet with superstar OF Kyle Tucker, but word is they may well talk this summer.

Star players don’t usually give up free agency in their walk year, especially with new teams Mookie Betts and Garrett Crochet are rare exceptions but the improved Cubs, a marquee franchise, could hold allure. They also did their biggest deals with other Excel clients Jason Heyward and Danby Swanson (although those deals, for $184M and $177M, respectively, don’t approach Tucker’s value and the cautious Cubs aren’t known for monster deals despite big revenue.)

The obvious comp is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s $500M deal. While Tucker is probably a better all-around player, Guerrero’s edges are age (Tucker is relatively young but 26 months older), greater cachet and the Jaysdesperation.

In Guerrero’s deal (and it’s great for baseball, he stayed!), a $335M signing bonus is spread over the 14 years a $25M tax benefit for Guerrero, whose main residence is Florida.
