We’ve all been there. You’re running to work in the sweltering heat, balancing a work tote in one hand, a cup of coffee in the other, and attempting to hold your phone between your head and shoulder to take a call. What do you need? A pocket, duh. Or, one of the best dresses with pockets!
Women’s fashion trends have changed dramatically over the years, but some contentious looks have stuck in our memories for ages; from the bra-burning of the 1960s to Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits and Kim Kardashian’s latest red-carpet corset controversy. When it comes to how we dress, everyone has something to say. But, few of us pay much attention to the political prowess of something as simple as a pocket.

For centuries, female clothing has lacked a utility that we all desire. Ages ago, designers may have written pockets out of women’s clothing for their perception that women didn’t need them. The case of the non-existent pocket was closely tied to our lack of political and economic rights, the assumption that women would not use space to stow their things, since there were few reasons for them to leave the home in the first place. Even more terrifying, a practical pocket may just add an inch or two to our perfectly petite frames (how dare they!).
Despite advances in women’s rights and the role of women in the workforce, the pocket problem has made little progress. A 2018 study on revealed that women’s pockets are 48% shorter and 65% narrower than men’s pockets. Even more offensive are the cases of fake pockets — women’s garments that are merely ‘decorated’ with the illusion of a pocket, a rectangular patch that doesn’t even open.
While functional styles are certainly harder to come by, some brands make a conscious effort to include pockets: , , and , to name just a few. In opposition to the plight of the pockets, the Post Wanted team has rounded up some of our favorite pocketed dresses for women: ma›xi, mini, and everything in between. We’ve selected a range of styles for every occasion — from wo›rkdays to weddings, and the gym to the couch.

Looking to make a statement? This bright Quince Tunic has you covered. It’s an ideal cut for those who prefer a loose, relaxed fit. Lightweight breathability makes it suitable for year-round wear, and the sleeves can easily be rolled up depending on your styling preferences.

New York Post Review: “I never appreciated having a dress with pockets until I became older. Now, I’m obsessed with them. This mid-length tunic dress’s pockets are deep enough, which means they’re practical. We love a practical dress, right? I love the lightweight cotton poplin material. It’s durable but without being heavy. While I wouldn’t wear it in winter, it’s perfect for spring and summers inside an air-conditioned office.” – Holly J Coley, commerce updates editor

If you’re looking to nail the always-put-together-corporate-girly look, an Aritzia cut may be your best bet. The youthful brand offers a wide selection of on-trend dresses that can be dressed up and down depending on the day, or your mood, for that matter. The Bond is one of our favorites, notably due to its sleek cut and deep pockets.

New York Post Review: “Curating an outfit before work can feel like a nightmare, not to mention leaving your closet looking like a bomb exploded. A simple, comfortable dress is the way to go, and The Bond from Aritzia is just that. A high boat neckline adds some class, and when paired with boots and a cardigan, you can dress it appropriately for the weather. Take off said accessories, add some heels and jewelry, and you have the ideal mini dress for post-work drinks. The fit-and-flare design lightly drapes around your body without hugging it. Soft structured stretch fabric moves and bends easily, so you can sit without adjusting and catch the subway without feeling like you’ll topple over. I sized up for a looser fit and love how it fits. The best part? It’s got pockets, too. As far as women’s work clothing goes, I give The Bond five stars.”- Miska Salemann, commerce reporter

New York Post Review: “I’m obsessed with the clean, comfortable design and effortlessness of this exercise dress from Abercrombie,” Meaghan Roche, Senior Manager, Commerce SEO, told The Post. “With built-in shorts complete with a slim phone pocket, and adjustable straps, this dress is perfect for errands, walks, or actual exercise like tennis, golf, or pickleball.”
However, the classic contrasting colors of the navy and white detailing allow this dress to “even be dressed up for brunch with the girls,” she added.

New York Post Review: “I found the sizing to be accurate and the shape forgiving of my fluctuating waistband,” shared Commerce Writer, Emma Sutton-Williams. “For care, it’s not as easy as tossing it into a washing machine, so for this, I’d say it’s a little finicky, but you can wash it at home in cold water and dry it flat, which keeps the fabric looking fresh.”

New York Post Updates Editor, Holly J Coley, doesn’t wear dresses often, but there was one she had for a short time that she really loved. That dress was by ML Monique Lhuillier Sunshine Day Gown. She scored it off Rent The Runway and wore it to a wedding. While it’s currently out of stock in the bright yellow shade she loved, there’s still a solid black version available.
New York Post Review: “I loved it not only because of its bright color but also the thick material and pockets!” Coley also pointed out that this option from Revolve costs a fraction of a similar luxury style. “The Madella Midi Dress from Faithful The Brand is a more affordable dupe. Same bright color and deep pockets, but a lot less. It’s also made with organic cotton, so it’s good for those with sensitive skin, plus it is lightweight.”
